The Importance of Standardization

Image of standardization

As organizations work to drive efficiency, productivity, and ultimately competitive advantage through the use of technology, it is important to understand striking a balance between standardization and innovation.

In this article we will go over why it is so important to implement standardization wherever possible in your I.T. operations. We will write a future article on when to use customization and innovation to gain a competitive advantage and how to know the limits. Both these articles relate back to our article on utilizing Technology as a Strategy.

What do you mean standardize?

Yes, that statement can be a bit vague. When we talk about standardization for I.T., we are primarily talking about:

  • hardware (not having a mix of whatever was on special at the time of purchase),

  • processes (following established industry best-practices), and

  • software (using the same tool sets to accomplish tools across an organization).

So...why should you standardize?

Streamline operations

By standardizing your configurations, it simplifies the management processes by reducing complexity of maintaining and troubleshooting diverse systems.

If all your team are using the same toolset, you can respond to challenges, implement change and find efficiencies faster.

Enhanced Security

A standardized IT environment makes it easier to implement consistent security protocols and updates across an organization. This reduces vulnerabilities and strengthens defenses against cyber threats, safeguarding sensitive data and ensuring regulatory compliance.

Should you ever suffer a breach, if your security is documented and consistent with established best-practices, remediation is faster and more effective, recovery is more likely and if you have Cyber Insurance, you are less likely to be denied a claim.

Improve Collaboration

Consistency in IT configurations fosters seamless collaboration among teams. Employees can easily share files, access common applications, and communicate across departments, leading to enhanced productivity and innovation.

Scalability and Flexibility

By having a standardized environment, you will have a solid foundation for scaling up as you need to. Perhaps contrary to belief, standardization in most of the organization will allow you to be flexible and adapt in the areas that demand it. By limiting the variables to only those that need to be flexible, your organization can adjust on the fly when truly necessary.

Conclusion

Standardization plays a pivotal role in driving operational efficiency, security, and collaboration within organizations.

By embracing standardization as a foundation for innovation and customization, organizations can optimize their IT infrastructure to meet evolving challenges and seize new opportunities in the dynamic marketplace.
